VATICAN CITY, OCT. 10, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is encouraging the Eastern Catholic Churches to conserve their identity, patrimony and traditions.
The Pope stated this Saturday in an audience with participants in a congress marking the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Code of Canons of Eastern Churches.
The congress was organized by the Congregation for Eastern Churches, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity the Pontifical Oriental Institute, and the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts.
The Pontiff affirmed that "the 'sacra canones' of the ancient Church, that inspire the Oriental codification in force, stimulate all the Oriental Churches to conserve their own identity, which is simultaneously Eastern and Catholic."
"In preserving the Catholic communion the Eastern Catholic Churches did not at all intend to deny their own tradition," he added.
"As has been many times repeated," the Holy Father said, "the full union of the Eastern Catholic Churches with the Church of Rome that is already realized must not lead to a diminution of the consciousness of the unique authenticity and originality of those Churches."
"For this reason," he continued, "it is the task of all the Eastern Catholic Churches to conserve the common disciplinary patrimony and nourish their own traditions, which is a treasure for the whole Church."
Benedict XVI noted that "the same 'sacri canones' of the first centuries of the Church constitute to a large extent the same basic patrimony of canonical discipline that also regulates the Orthodox Churches."
"Thus the Eastern Catholic Churches can offer a peculiar and relevant contribution to the ecumenical journey," he said.
"In the context of the Church's current effort for a new evangelization," the Pope affirmed, "canon law, as the peculiar and indispensable ordering of ecclesial fellowship, will not fail to contribute to the life and the mission of the Church in the world, if all the components of the People of God know how to interpret is wisely and apply it faithfully."

That is what Fr.Paul Kottakkal, Fr.Joji are all doing. That's what exactly our Bishop is following.. That is what Mar Powathil said much earlier...Now that's what almost all bishops are accepting it. That is what Fr.Thundathil and Fr.Karukapally were all done in their churches

I noticed that the Holy Father is carrying a new processional cross. Can you tell us about that new cross and perhaps why the Holy Father made the decision to carry this new cross rather than the one that he has carried for the past several years — the same one that Pope John Paul II carried?
I too have noticed this new pastoral cross used by Benedict XVI. While I have no particular insights into the Holy Father's mind, I doubt that we need to try to dig out profound theological motives. The most probable reason is that he found this cross more to his taste than the other one.
The slightly abstract pastoral staff that John Paul II carried all over the world was first designed for Pope Paul VI, a connoisseur and promoter of modern sacred art. The Italian Pope established a modern arts gallery in the Vatican Museums and commissioned the huge Risen Christ bronze sculpture in the Paul VI audience hall.

Many Catholics in the world are rejoicing over Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement last week that he will beatify John Paul on May 1. Beatification is the last major step before possible sainthood.
എന്നാ പറയാനാ എന്റെ ബ്ലോഗു ചേട്ടാ,ഞാന്‍ ഒരു നേര്സ് ആയി ജോലി നോക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിട്ട് വര്ഷം ഇരുപതായി.എനിക്യാണേല്‍ എല്ലാ ദിവസോം കര്‍ത്താവു കുരിശില്‍ തരക്കപെട്ട ആ റുപത്തില്‍ നോക്കി ഒരു കൊന്ത ചെല്ലിയാലെ കിടന്നോരങ്ങാന്‍ പട്ടതോല്ലു.അല്ല ഞാന്‍ ഒന്ന് ചോതിക്യട്ടെ കേട്ടോ.ഈ പറയാനാ അച്ഛന്റെ അപ്പന്‍ കണ്ടു പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചത്‌ ഏതു കുരിശാ?ഇതിയാന്റെ അമ്മ കണ്ടു പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചത്‌ ഏതു കുരിശാ?ഇതിയാന്റെ അമ്മേടെ അമ്മ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ച ക്രിസ് ഏതുവാ?അല്ല ഏതുവാന്നോന്നു പറ.ഇതിയാന്റെ വലിയപ്പന്‍ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ച കുരിശു ഏതുവാ?ഈ പറയണ അച്ഛന്റെ അമ്മ എന്നും കൊന്ത ചെല്ലുമ്പോള്‍ പണ്ടേ നോക്കി മനമുരുകി ഈ കൊച്ചനെ നേരെ ആക്കണേ കര്‍ത്താവെ എന്ന് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ച കുരിശു ഏതുവാ?അതുകൊണ്ട് എനിക്ക് ഗാര്‍ലന്‍ഡിലെ ആണുങ്ങളോട് ഒന്നേ പറയാന്‍ ഒള്ളു.നിങ്ങള്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ അണ്ടിയും തുക്കി ഇട്ടു നടന്നിട്ട് മിണ്ടാതിരുന്നാല്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ പെണ്ണുങ്ങള്‍ കേറി വര്‍ത്താനം പറയും കേട്ടോ.എന്നിട്ട് ഇനി കാണാ കുണാ എന്നൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞിട്ട് ഒരു കര്യോല്ല്യ.
SOme catholics of kerala think some day the pope will beatify powethil also for his service for the changanasseri diocese,especially for creating them an identity.
Those people were so troubled not having an identity.That is why they worship him.
